While researching "Played by Two Guys Who Can Barely Run Their Own Lives" to fill the "Risk" square on my card, I found a timeline of significant tabletop games introduced in the 1900s. I thought other folks might find that useful for this challenge.

(cross posted from my account)

I've done four events for AllBingo so far and I encourage folks to join in hosting. It can be intimidating doing your first event, but it's actually pretty easy. You can get prompt ideas and lists from previous challenges or use one or more of the lists on the Bingo Generator. Many of the recurring fests use the Bingo Generator lists to great success. While it's nice to do a wrap-up and some reward banners, I have yet to and no one has complained. I try to post the event a week to a few days before it starts.

Recommendations: Write up your event as soon as you think of it, even if you don't do all the formatting. This gives you time to come up with more prompts and makes you less likely to forget what you meant to do. Use your word processor's alphabetize function to check for duplicate prompts.

Things to include:
  • general description of what the event is, preferably with when it'll run
  • Any challenges (different bingo shapes, themes, etc)
  • Relevant links (for examples, see the 2023 Public Domain Fest, Land of Oz Fest, or Leaky Pipeline Bingo Fest)
  • Link to the Bingo card generator and maybe the AO3 collection
  • Public cards. I tend to do several of different sizes and themes, but even just one is enough!
  • Prompt lists in a textarea box ( <textarea> ). Separate each prompt with commas and if you need a comma in a prompt replace it with the HTML code &#44;
How to post it:
  • Same as any Dreamwidth post!
  • Put your description outside the cut and everything else in the cut
  • For the prompt lists and bingo cards, the easiest way (in my opinion), is to switch to the HTML tag and post the code there. Then switch to rich text to double check (it tends to add a whole bunch of unneccesary line breaks, unless you disable the auto-formatting, which means you have to code in the line breaks you want)
  • Add your tags: event, !public cards, month: whatever, theme: whatever, public card
And here's a general template you can use, with the HTML included (remove the <table> and the prompt list between the textarea tags):
Description with link to <a href="https://an.owomoyela.net/fun/bingo_generator">Bingo card generator</a> and maybe the <a href="https://archiveofourown.org/collections/Allbingo">AO3 collection</a>.

The Bingo Card Generator currently offers 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 options.  I just noticed that some new sizes had been added when I went there to check something.  So for instance, if you want just a postage stamp, you can use the 2x2 option.

[personal profile] magibrain has updated the Bingo Card Generator with three new lists of prompts that I submitted: Demifiction, People-Watching, and Problems That Can't Be Solved by Hitting.

Demifiction is imaginary stuff written as if it were nonfiction.  This includes such things as reviews of books that don't exist, fake movie posters, heroes' shopping lists, etc.  It can be challenging to write but it makes a great way to stretch your creative skills, and a really fun way to explore your settings.

People-watching is just a bunch of traits, actions, and other features of folks within eyeshot.  You can use this to generate a random crowd of characters, to suggest people your protagonists might encounter, or other things in a story.  You can also print out a bingo card and sit down at a mall or a county fair and try to make bingo.  This trains your observational skills.

Problems That Can't Be Solved by Hitting will require both you and your characters to think things through instead of using violent action to cover up a lack of actual meaning.  Some of the prompts involve tense situations, while others are milder challenges.  Some of them also run in lower-traffic directions than the violent mainstream.  Many of them are good for gentle fiction (no sex, violence, or foul language) although you might have to edit a bit.  This list is brought to you Hollywood!Fail, by the $6 and 90 minutes I wasted on a really stupid movie, and by the letters F and U.

[community profile] allbingo  recommends the use of the BBFC rating system. The introduction explains what kind of things are considered in rating a film and why. This system pays attention to how a work makes people feel (i.e. if it's likely to upset viewers) or act ("imitable behavior" covers unwise things that small children might copy). Scroll down and click the colored symbols in the left sidebar for a detailed description of each rating, what it may and may not include, along with analysis of other considerations. You should be able to read those guidelines and get a pretty clear idea of how to rate a work, unlike the American rating system which is a lot more vague. Because this system isn't as widely known in America, you might want to say "BBFC rating 12" or whatever and link the BBFC part.

If you're only familiar with the American rating system, that's okay too. It doesn't provide clear guidelines and the rating process is not as meticulous, but most people will recognize it.

Special thanks to [personal profile] lilly_c for tipping me to the BBFC resource.  It has been added to the Posting Template for future reference.

Based on a member request, there is a now a collection for Allbingo fills over on AO3. Anything you have used to fill a square in your bingo claims here on Allbingo, that will fit into AO3 posting parameters, is eligible for inclusion in that collection. Go add your stuff or watch for other people's pieces to appear!

If people want to have subcollections for specific monthly fests, that's also an option.

Here's a handy tool for gamers or writers.  It's a deck of cards that subdivides into four types: setting, atmosphere, challenge, and bonus.  Each card suggests one or more ideas relating to its category, and there are samples on the page for you to browse.

For playing creative bingo, you could make a bingo card by dealing out Destiny Cards into a grid.  Alternatively, start with a bingo card and use Destiny as matching prompts for expansion; this is great if you use a prompt list that gives settings and your characters need help (bonus) or the list gives characters and you need plot (challenge).

Hallo, all! I'm the one who's been coding the Bingo Card Generator over at http://an.owomoyela.net/fun/bingo_generator , and I thought I'd drop in and let you know of some new features.
  • A longstanding bug with the Aarne-Thompson Fairytale Classifications list has been resolved, meaning that now you can use that list in conjunction with other lists, and it will select values from the whole Aarne-Thompson list and not just the first 852 or so.
  • Background color, text color, and border color are now all customizable, with a popup color picker. You should be able to specify any color you'd like for any of these values, and if all the JavaScript is working correctly, you'll be able to see how it looks in an example square before selecting it.
  • You can now generate 3x3 and 7x7 cards.
I'm hoping to add in an option to toggle the free space on and off soon, as well as adding 2x2, 4x4, and 6x6 generators. (The even square generators, for reasons having to do with code architecture, need the free space toggle to be implemented before they can be added in.)

Anyway, let me know if you see anything going wildly wrong! And if there are features you'd really like to see, let me know. I can't promise to implement them all, but I know that people may begin using this in ways I didn't anticipate, and it's be cool to support those uses as much as is practical. :)

[Update] Just added in some center-space customization!

[personal profile] magibrain has updated the Bingo Card Generator.

First, there is now an option to choose between a transparent card or a white background.  Using the white background should prevent the problem on some sites where part of a card can get "lost" behind other elements of a page, like what happened with the public card for our Bingo Valentines fest.  (The lost sections still exist and can be found by copying and pasting the card elsewhere.)  Transparent background is useful if you're pasting into a dark-colored site.

Second, I submitted another batch of prompt lists which have been added to Ysabetwordsmith's Miscellaneous Prompts.  The new ones are Childhood Experiences (50), Ethnic Groups (140), Sex & Romance (70), Swadesh Basic List (100), Types of Family (40), and Worldbuilding (150).  Childhood Experiences and Types of Family run to fluff with a few angsty bits, ideal for characterization.  Ethnic Groups can be used as setting or character inspiration to boost representation.  Mix and match it on the same card with things like Chromatic Characters, or generate separate cards and match congruent squares to put an ethnic character into a plot situation.  Sex & Romance is the counterpoint to the ace list already available, and mixes well with Kinks.  The Swadesh Basic List offers 100 common words used by linguists in language research.  Primarily intended for constructed language prompts, this list also works for random topics.  Worldbuilding assists creators in fleshing out a new setting with prompts based on physical geography and cultural dynamics.

In particular, Sex & Romance and Types of Family may be useful in the Bingo Valentines fest.  Add Childhood Experiences if you want to explore the gradeschool Valentine's Day experience.

Many thanks to [personal profile] chordatesrock, who has been making some achievement icons for [community profile] allbingo.  Currently there are four for The Cake Is Not a Lie, two for Bechdel Bonanza, and one for Xenolinguistics.  I have gathered these in a scrapbook folder.  They are available for use by anyone who makes the relevant achievement; see the "Bingo and Achievement Options" post for details.

If anyone else wants to make icons, banners, etc. for the community or accomplishments, you're welcome to contribute whatever you wish.

Community description: This community encourages people to create large works.

Fandom or Original: Fills may be in any fandom, whether FPF or RPF. Original fiction is also allowed. Fills may be slash, femmeslash, het, or gen. You may combine fandoms in any way you wish - 25 fills with 25 different fandoms is allowed, 25 fills in the same fandom is allowed, anything in between is allowed.

Types of Fills: Fills must be fic or podfic with a length of at least 5,000 words.

I would love to discuss ways to include other types of fanworks in this challenge. If there's a demand for different types of media to be included then there's no reason why they shouldn't be. My own experience is mostly limited to fic, however, so I would rely on input from others to work out suitable minimum requirements.

Other Notable Rules: This fest has fewer bingo options but more extra options, and the size requirements are different for some of them.

Bingo fests typically have a theme and a philosophy. These vary, so their rules and parameters vary likewise. Below is a guide to some bingo communities that you might enjoy visiting. Much of the content has been pasted from the profiles and rules of the relevant communities, because people like to phrase things in different ways.

I have made a batch of new prompt lists for the bingo card generator by [personal profile] magibrain, who has uploaded them into the menu. They are now listed as "Ysabetwordsmith's miscellaneous prompts." The title has been changed to reflect the fact that most of these will work for more than just fiction, and several are explicitly designed for other kinds of creativity. Also the lists have been alphabetized by title within category, which should make them easier to find.
