ysabetwordsmith: Bingo balls (bingo)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [community profile] allbingo
This community calendar provides a place to organize events in [community profile] allbingo. Ideally, there will be periodic fests and challenges on different themes, organized by different people. If you would like to run an event here, please speak up! See the calendars from 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 for ideas.

Organizing an Event

This community is a low-traffic, low-pressure opportunity to organize an activity. Anyone can volunteer to host something. Two or more people can cohost the same event; this is a good idea if you want to participate but your availability varies. The requirements are pretty simple:

1) Pick a theme and a timespan. Ideally, aim for a month that doesn't already have an activity, but time-sensitive events may be allowed closer together as needed. If you're not sure of people's interest, you could post a query first and ask, especially if you have several possible themes or times in mind. Declare your interest so that your event can be added to the schedule. See a list of previous fests for ideas.

Given that we now have a lot of repeating fests, those can share a month with a unique fest. It would also help to spread out the repeating events so we don't have two of the same category in a row or two for the same season, and so on. We could use more fests from specific fandoms -- those have been popular in the past.

2) Post details for the parameters of the event. This needs to include at least the beginning and end dates, along with the theme. It helps to mention any unusual bingo patterns, communities, or prompt lists that would suit the event. You may want to generate and include a "public" card that anyone can use. You can use < textarea > before the card code and < / textarea > (remove the spaces) after the card code to create a box of code that people can copy to put the public card on their own blog. The same code box can be used to offer a list of thematic prompts for anyone wishing to make their own card from similar motifs.

It's not required, but hosts often break down a long list of prompts into sublists by topic. This works especially well in fandom-specific fests or other large topics. Popular sublists include characters, locations, things the canon was particularly known for (e.g. monster of the week, nerdy T-shirts), episode or issue titles, and quotes. The approach allows readers to choose a specific sublist or mix-and-match. Some players like to make several minicards instead of one big card.

Typically the event host will make an advance announcement about two weeks before the fest opens, with such things as a public card or a suggestion of where else to get an appropriate card, so that people can start making content. Then make an "event open" post on the first day it's open. You may advertise your fest on communities like [community profile] fandomcalendar or [community profile] fandom_on_dw if you want.

3) Make a "Meet and Greet" post if you wish. This is not required, and the frame questions can be as simple or complex as you wish. Basically it provides a place for folks to connect with each other based on common interests, and to squee about the theme.

4) Keep an eye on the activity. Ideally, answer questions about the event, encourage people to participate, cheer for the ones who post a bingo, etc. If an argument breaks out, remind people to play nice. You might want to do a little promotion in other relevant venues, but it's not required.

5) It helps to make a wrapup post at the end of the fest too, although this is also optional. Some people like to make a general badge, or custom badges for people who made bingo during the active month.

I want to claim the Drabble Fest that I've been doing the last couple of years. I suppose we should call it reoccuring. Do you want me to do it in November again or September since it hasn't been claimed?

You don't need to move. We can either share November or I can take a different month.

I would like to do one in May if I um may lol? I want to do a superhero theme because May is Tony Stark/Iron Man's birthday month. I'm thinking perhaps a mix of prompts from both Marvel and DC?

Yes, please! I have put you down for May. Check the calendar entry to see if you're happy with it.

Looks great!

I'm going to start work on this now so I can have it ready to go on May 1st.

I’d like to host in March again if it’s still needing a fest. I can rerun Celtic, Crafting Month, March Is…, Hot Summer Writes, or do a fest about Wonderful Women to celebrate Women’s History Month. (Yes, Diana Prince would be a prompt, but she’d be the only superhera, so I don’t steal anything fun from innitmavelous’ fest.)

I feel like I should want to pick Women, but I'm really feeling like pushing the "easy button" for 2024 and going with crafting again.

I was thinking of doing a Pirate/Piracy themed fest. September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so maybe in August?

September would be great.

If there's some empty spots later, I can come up with something.

Edit: actually, how would you feel about a Colors fest in one of the empty months? I'm thinking of mostly pulling from the color themed lists on RainbowLists ( https://rainbowlists.dreamwidth.org/tag/theme:+color ), which are phrases and idioms with a color in them

(how did I manage to make this not a reply to your reply?)

I was also going to use an old fest as a resource for the Pirate stuff and I thought I'd include modern day media pirating (screw Disney) as well.

Yeah, it's really fun to make the prompt lists, but I haven't finished one yet (I'm close! I just haven't had the energy to finish anything!). That's one reason I've been sharing the lists and things on Tumblr and trying to make it clear that people can do whatever they want with them.

June would be great, or I can do it earlier if you need to fill a month

Hello, there! I don't know about hosting, because I've never tried, but I would like to suggest possible topics. A medical-themed April BINGO if anyone's interested in running it. There are so many things you could do with it. Just some prompts would be (off the top of my head)

- surgery
- brain
- hospital
- doctors/interns
- nurses
- healing
- textbook case

and more!

I was thinking of April simply because the medical soaps The Doctors and General Hospital debuted on April 1st in 1963.

I also had one more idea. What about an alphabet theme? But choosing all one letter for words. Like the prompts have to be all "A" words like amnesia, altercation, abduction, ally ... or "C" words like cat, coffee, catastrophe... etc. Whatever the bingo player chose for their letter they would need to stick with.

Just some suggestions! TY so much if you read this long diatribe lol
