I am:
elizabeth_rice. It's my fandom pseud and I've been using it since 2005.
I make: fanfics. I've started writing meta again (last time I wrote meta was in 2004). Recs.
I like: lots of things. As long as the fictional work (or fanwork) is entertaining, I'll enjoy it. I love games, especially action and puzzle-solving/mystery. I don't like sports except for baseball, skateboarding, archery, martial arts, horse riding. Besides bows and arrows, I love swords. Especially curved blades. My favourite genres are horror, mystery/crime, and comedy.
I play: I started participating in bingo challenges last year so it's a small list:
ladiesbingo,
kink_bingo, and
genprompt_bingo. I've only posted my fills for KB so far. I'm also waiting for
cottoncandy_bingo to open. :)
Find me: you may PM me at
elizabeth_rice or
elizabeth_rice. My fanworks are at
elizabeth_rice and
fanfic_by_lizzy. My recs and informal meta posts are at
lizzys_study. Anon (screened) commenting is on at my DW comms and on AO3.
About me: I'm an artist. Besides art, I've also studied sociology and psychology. Luckily I only took an introductory course in psychology because it turned out to be a huge mistake. Taking sociology was the best decision of my life. In fact, I was preparing to study criminal law but I changed my mind because of the apathy and corruption in the justice system. (Hm, I'm being very chatty. Might as well spill it all.) I'm also a survivor. I've mostly moved on but I'm still recovering. I've got major anger issues, triggered by witnessing someone else being bullied or discriminated against or treated unfairly. Trust issues, intimacy issues so extreme that I cannot even receive or give internet hugs. Anxiety disorder. Slight OCD tendencies, tendency towards depression, slight tendency towards suicidal thoughts. And nightmares. I compartmentalise and have developed a rather dark sense of humour, gallows humour = coping technique. I'm very sarcastic but mostly not online because sarcastic jokes heavily rely on tone of voice and facial expression and it just doesn't work online.

Date: 2014-01-30 11:27 pm (UTC)That sounds like fun. Some of the prompt lists on the Bingo Card Generator might work for meta and/or recs.
>> I don't like sports except for baseball, skateboarding, archery, martial arts, horse riding. <<
I have enjoyed archery and horse riding, although I rarely have an opportunity for either. Skateboarding is fun to watch. We've got tickets to a skateboard circus later this spring.
>> Besides bows and arrows, I love swords. Especially curved blades. <<
I admire swords too. I am particularly fond of damask, although the most durable I've seen were upcycled from stonecutter blades.
>>I started participating in bingo challenges last year so it's a small list.<<
You might be interested to know that we're running a Bingo Valentines fest here, with posting from Feb. 1-21. It can be played for any combination of asexual, aromantic, sexual, romantic, whatever relationships people want to celebrate. Borrow a card from some other suitable fest, or make your own.
>> I'm an artist. <<
Cool! What media and subject matter do you like? Art bingo is welcome here too. I made a prompt list for artistic media so there'd be something optimized for that, rather than all fiction-oriented prompts.
>> Besides art, I've also studied sociology and psychology. Luckily I only took an introductory course in psychology because it turned out to be a huge mistake. Taking sociology was the best decision of my life. <<
I know the feeling. I love linguistics, but the one psycholinguistics class I took in college was a trainwreck. I like sociology and psychology too. I'm more inclined to learn by reading and observation than in class though.
>> In fact, I was preparing to study criminal law but I changed my mind because of the apathy and corruption in the justice system. <<
Yeah, that's why I'm not into public education like my parents. The concept remains valid, but the execution has turned into a clusterfuck. Have you looked into restorative justice or nonviolent communication, though? When the system's broken, it helps to give people other tools.
>> I'm also a survivor. <<
Congratulations on surviving.
>> I've mostly moved on but I'm still recovering. <<
Yeah, it's an ongoing process.
>> I've got major anger issues, triggered by witnessing someone else being bullied or discriminated against or treated unfairly. <<
Well, one of the most effective ways to fight that kind of nonsense is to deny the bullies their applause. Most want an appreciative audience. If they don't get that, it really harshes their buzz. There are tips on how to disrupt bullying. If you can learn to channel your outrage into effective action, rather than freezing or lashing out, it could turn into a useful tool.
>> Trust issues, intimacy issues so extreme that I cannot even receive or give internet hugs. <<
Bummer. Those can take a lot of work to fix.
This is the kind of detail that I eventually remember with friends I interact with regularly, but less so with occasional acquaintances. If I forget, just remind me, I won't be offended if you say something like "No touchie, I have trust issues."
>> I compartmentalise and have developed a rather dark sense of humour, gallows humour = coping technique. <<
Do what works for you. I've written some pretty dark stuff.

Yeah, bingo is very good for doing things other than writing fanfic especially with prompts that I'm not very knowledgeable about.
2. I have enjoyed archery and horse riding, although I rarely have an opportunity for either. Skateboarding is fun to watch. We've got tickets to a skateboard circus later this spring.
True, finding or making time is tough. What's a skateboard circus? It sounds cool.

Yeah, I am. I've always wanted to write at least one traditional Valentine-themed fanfic and one non-traditional.
4. Cool! What media and subject matter do you like? Art bingo is welcome here too. I made a prompt list for artistic media so there'd be something optimized for that, rather than all fiction-oriented prompts.
Haha, totally not suitable for fandom; landscapes and still life mostly. And in the fandom people are naturally more interested in characters. I love acrylics and oils.
5. I know the feeling. I love linguistics, but the one psycholinguistics class I took in college was a trainwreck. I like sociology and psychology too. I'm more inclined to learn by reading and observation than in class though.
Oh, cool! My dad studied linguistics too. And yeah, traditional class-room setting isn't for me either.
6. Yeah, that's why I'm not into public education like my parents. The concept remains valid, but the execution has turned into a clusterfuck. Have you looked into restorative justice or nonviolent communication, though? When the system's broken, it helps to give people other tools.
That's very true. It's cool that both your parents are involved in the same field.
7. Congratulations on surviving.
Thanks.

It's true that I need to learn to use my anger in a better way, also part of the reason why I changed my mind about law. Fortunately I'm not good at keeping up with fandom wanks so I've only lashed out twice in 10 years.
It's amazing that you have a resource for everything. I was going through some of your admin posts here and I read the one about learning to analyse your own writing and that was a good resource. I'm confident with my art skills but not with my fiction writing abilities.
Re: Welcome!
Date: 2014-01-31 02:56 am (UTC)From the thumbnail description and imagery in the show catalog, we assume people will get on skateboards and do tricks. Previously we've seen a Chinese circus with people stacking bicycles on top of each other, and an avant-garde dance troupe who flung themselves off 20-foot towers onto sponge mats. Basically we thought the skateboards sounded cool.
>> Yeah, I am. I've always wanted to write at least one traditional Valentine-themed fanfic and one non-traditional. <<
Yay! Here is the discussion post for the Bingo Valentines fest. It has lots of ideas on which other communities would make good cards for this activity, or which prompt lists on the Bingo Card Generator would suit different approaches.
>> Haha, totally not suitable for fandom; landscapes and still life mostly. And in the fandom people are naturally more interested in characters. I love acrylics and oils. <<
I love landscapes. Well-done still life pictures can pique my interest. I like both acrylic and oil paints for different reasons -- primarily as a fan, I'm not much good at painting.
YMMV, but I think these topics work fine with fanart, if you pick the right fandoms. Some have settings that are almost like characters, or just so beautiful that people love the scenery for its own sake. Think about how much Tolkien art is about the world rather than the people in it, like this view of Rivendell. For still life, a favorite is to put 2-3 mundane things with one F&SF thing, like a bowl of fruit and a ray gun.
You might enjoy the science fantasy shared world Torn World, which features a lot of landscape and still life art in addition to character portraits and story illustrations. Beads are important in Northern culture, so we have several images of those. This painting of Scarred Mountain inspired a story that I wrote.
>> It's true that I need to learn to use my anger in a better way, also part of the reason why I changed my mind about law. <<
You'll get the hang of it. That kind of thing takes practice, just like any other skill.
>> It's amazing that you have a resource for everything. I was going through some of your admin posts here and I read the one about learning to analyse your own writing and that was a good resource. <<
I'm glad I could help. When I built this community, I tried to think of what people would need and post resources for that. This is just something I do. I write a ton of nonfiction as well as the fiction and poetry. My articles are scattered across my blogs, my personal website, and all over the web.
>> I'm confident with my art skills but not with my fiction writing abilities. <<
Poetry is my best skill, the others more variable. Practice helps a lot -- one thing I use bingo for is just making stuff in big batches. Plus the cards are great for pairing with other writing exercises, like ones on plot or characterization or worldbuilding.

Date: 2014-02-06 03:51 pm (UTC)2. Thanks for the link for the Bingo Valentines fest. I've looked at the public card and I think I can make a single-line bingo along one of the rows. I'm definitely making a rec list for one square/prompt. And write at least two fics. Haven't decided what I'll do for the rest.
3. Yes, SF/F is in fact the best genre for settings and objects, the art/illustrations are really imaginative and creative. That's my favourite aspect of SF/F, but I'm not a huge fan of the genre. I mean, I love the genre for it's creativity and imagination but I don't feel inspired to create fanworks for them. But thanks for the links.
4.
I hope so.
5.
This is a great idea and I'm going to do it this time with my other bingo cards.
6.
Now that's amazing. I especially love the last part, "all over the web". That is so cool. :)

Well, I have blogs on DW and LJ. I have a personal website and a coven website. There are several magazine sites that have posted work I wrote for them. And then there's a ton of random stuff that I submitted to different places or that people copied and posted. Even some of my pre-cyberspace stuff has appeared.
If you ever have half a day or a day to kill, type "Elizabeth Barrette" into your favorite search engine (and make sure to include the finial "e" or you'll get the other lady poet). Last time I googled myself, I go through 25+ pages before I started to find things that weren't me.
