Organizing an Event
This community is a low-traffic, low-pressure opportunity to organize an activity. Anyone can volunteer to host something. Two or more people can cohost the same event; this is a good idea if you want to participate but your availability varies. The requirements are pretty simple:
1) Pick a theme and a timespan. Ideally, aim for a month that doesn't already have an activity, but time-sensitive events may be allowed closer together as needed. If you're not sure of people's interest, you could post a query first and ask, especially if you have several possible themes or times in mind. Declare your interest so that your event can be added to the schedule.
2) Make a post detailing the parameters of the event. This needs to include at least the beginning and end dates, along with the theme. It helps to mention any unusual bingo patterns, communities, or prompt lists that would suit the event. You may want to generate and include a "public" card that anyone can use. You can use < textarea > before the card code and < / textarea > (remove the spaces) after the card code to create a box of code that people can copy to put the public card on their own blog. The same code box can be used to offer a list of thematic prompts for anyone wishing to make their own card from similar motifs.
3) Keep an eye on the activity. Ideally, answer questions about the event, encourage people to participate, cheer for the ones who post a bingo, etc. If an argument breaks out, remind people to play nice. You might want to do a little promotion in other relevant venues, but it's not required.

Date: 2014-02-13 06:28 pm (UTC)Folks can set a fest to whatever length they want. My inclination with thematic fests like this has indeed been a month or less, because the bingo communities are doing theirs in much larger spans. You have to balance brevity and targeting (say for a holiday) against giving people enough time to make stuff. So maybe 3-6 weeks?
>> I'm very interested but right now <<
Yay!
>> I have a deadline coming up; there's a fic I want to post for a fest by the 16th of Feb. so I'll be busy till then. But after that I'll let you know my decision.<<
The Bingo Valentines fest is running through Feb. 21 so there's no rush. While there's no official rule against overlapping fests, I think it would be more effective to space them out. March would be great.
Re: Okay...
Date: 2014-02-19 01:51 pm (UTC)My idea is to hold a remix fest during October so the theme will be Halloween. So the goal of the fest would be to take a fanfic (for example) and remix it and turn it into a horror story using Halloween/supernatural themes. This way all participants have a set guideline they can follow and the people who volunteer their fanworks know exactly what the participants are doing.
One example, someone made a parody of Pride and Prejudice and turned it into a zombie story. I haven't read it but I've heard about it, let me find the link... here Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
So creating remixes similar to this. The participant can make the remix comedic or dramatic, up to them.
I'd need to compile a list of fandomers who give blanket permission for others to create remixes based on their work. That'd be easy, I think fanlore has done that already. Of course, participants can volunteer their own fanworks for remix purposes.
Do you think it's a good idea? If not, I have other ideas too.

That makes sense. I'll pencil it in on the Community Calendar.

That should minimize squabbles.

My ability to give apt feedback on this is limited by the fact that I don't do remix fests. However, I'm perfectly happy to host things that other folks are enthusiastic about; variety is a good thing.
I just checked the Bingo Card Generator and it has a bunch of new prompt lists, one of them "Horror Subgenres," which could be mixed with others such as "Death," "Desperate Situations," "End of the World," etc. to make cards suitable for your fest. I do suggest posting a public card for the Horror Remix, the way I did with Bingo Valentines.

Date: 2014-02-19 11:31 pm (UTC)Great idea, thanks.
Re: Okay...
Date: 2014-02-19 11:49 pm (UTC)If the active period of the fest is meant to be October, then I'd say that advance announcements, rules, etc. could be posted in September. That would actually give people a month extra to start working on stuff, before posting opens.
If you'd like to do something sooner, there's plenty of room to do a spring or summer fest before October, with a different theme.
Oh, and I forgot one list, there is a prompt set for Horror Tropes too.
Re: Okay...
Date: 2014-02-20 11:42 pm (UTC)Cool, I'll do it then.
Thanks!
I have one other idea but I need to think about it some more before I commit. I'll let you know.
