Organizing an Event
This community is a low-traffic, low-pressure opportunity to organize an activity. Anyone can volunteer to host something. Two or more people can cohost the same event; this is a good idea if you want to participate but your availability varies. The requirements are pretty simple:
1) Pick a theme and a timespan. Ideally, aim for a month that doesn't already have an activity, but time-sensitive events may be allowed closer together as needed. If you're not sure of people's interest, you could post a query first and ask, especially if you have several possible themes or times in mind. Declare your interest so that your event can be added to the schedule.
2) Make a post detailing the parameters of the event. This needs to include at least the beginning and end dates, along with the theme. It helps to mention any unusual bingo patterns, communities, or prompt lists that would suit the event. You may want to generate and include a "public" card that anyone can use. You can use < textarea > before the card code and < / textarea > (remove the spaces) after the card code to create a box of code that people can copy to put the public card on their own blog. The same code box can be used to offer a list of thematic prompts for anyone wishing to make their own card from similar motifs.
3) Keep an eye on the activity. Ideally, answer questions about the event, encourage people to participate, cheer for the ones who post a bingo, etc. If an argument breaks out, remind people to play nice. You might want to do a little promotion in other relevant venues, but it's not required.

Personal experience: none. Never run anything, not even in school.
Okay...
That's fine.
>> These would be
Correct.
>> So what kind of duties would one have? <<
Pretty much what I've done with Bingo Valentines:
1) Pick a theme and a timespan. If you're not sure of people's interest, you could post a query first and ask, especially if you have several possible themes or times in mind.
2) Make a post detailing the parameters of the event. This needs to include at least the beginning and end dates, along with the theme. It helps to mention any unusual bingo patterns, communities, or prompt lists that would suit the event.

>> Personal experience: none. Never run anything, not even in school. <<
Then this is a perfect opportunity to try! It's a low-stress project in a low-traffic venue. Most participants are already experienced at this kind of event. If there are mishaps, nothing vital will be disrupted. And then you'll have experience.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more.
Re: Okay...
Re: Okay...
Folks can set a fest to whatever length they want. My inclination with thematic fests like this has indeed been a month or less, because the bingo communities are doing theirs in much larger spans. You have to balance brevity and targeting (say for a holiday) against giving people enough time to make stuff. So maybe 3-6 weeks?
>> I'm very interested but right now <<
Yay!
>> I have a deadline coming up; there's a fic I want to post for a fest by the 16th of Feb. so I'll be busy till then. But after that I'll let you know my decision.<<
The Bingo Valentines fest is running through Feb. 21 so there's no rush. While there's no official rule against overlapping fests, I think it would be more effective to space them out. March would be great.
Re: Okay...
My idea is to hold a remix fest during October so the theme will be Halloween. So the goal of the fest would be to take a fanfic (for example) and remix it and turn it into a horror story using Halloween/supernatural themes. This way all participants have a set guideline they can follow and the people who volunteer their fanworks know exactly what the participants are doing.
One example, someone made a parody of Pride and Prejudice and turned it into a zombie story. I haven't read it but I've heard about it, let me find the link... here Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
So creating remixes similar to this. The participant can make the remix comedic or dramatic, up to them.
I'd need to compile a list of fandomers who give blanket permission for others to create remixes based on their work. That'd be easy, I think fanlore has done that already. Of course, participants can volunteer their own fanworks for remix purposes.
Do you think it's a good idea? If not, I have other ideas too.
Re: Okay...
Gauging audience interest is a good way to start.

That makes sense. I'll pencil it in on the Community Calendar.
>> I'd need to compile a list of fandomers who give blanket permission for others to create remixes based on their work. That'd be easy, I think fanlore has done that already. Of course, participants can volunteer their own fanworks for remix purposes. <<
That should minimize squabbles.
>> Do you think it's a good idea? If not, I have other ideas too. <<
My ability to give apt feedback on this is limited by the fact that I don't do remix fests. However, I'm perfectly happy to host things that other folks are enthusiastic about; variety is a good thing.
I just checked the Bingo Card Generator and it has a bunch of new prompt lists, one of them "Horror Subgenres," which could be mixed with others such as "Death," "Desperate Situations," "End of the World," etc. to make cards suitable for your fest. I do suggest posting a public card for the Horror Remix, the way I did with Bingo Valentines.
Re: Okay...
Great idea, thanks.
Re: Okay...
If the active period of the fest is meant to be October, then I'd say that advance announcements, rules, etc. could be posted in September. That would actually give people a month extra to start working on stuff, before posting opens.
If you'd like to do something sooner, there's plenty of room to do a spring or summer fest before October, with a different theme.
Oh, and I forgot one list, there is a prompt set for Horror Tropes too.
Re: Okay...
Cool, I'll do it then.
Thanks!
I have one other idea but I need to think about it some more before I commit. I'll let you know.

1. April: since April is National Poetry Writing Month and Earth day is on the 22nd of April, I got a theme: Spring (Northern hemisphere) and Autumn (Southern hemisphere) Fanworks Fest. I want to emphasise creation of other fanworks like poetry, podfics (especially of poems), art, meta, vids, etc. For participants who can't or don't know how to do any of the above, fanfics or origfics are welcome too.
2. May: since May is National Masturbation Month, I'd like to host a fest for this month too.
ETA: Solo Celebration Fanworks Fest? Or Solo Celebration Bingo?
So if you approve, I'll get started on the public card and rules and promo post for the April fest.
Yay!
I'm happy to hear that.
>> 1. April: since April is National Poetry Writing Month and Earth day is on the 22nd of April, I got a theme: Spring (Northern hemisphere) and Autumn (Southern hemisphere) Fanworks Fest. <<
This works for me. I have added it to the community calendar.
>> I want to emphasise creation of other fanworks like poetry, podfics (especially of poems), art, meta, vids, etc. For participants who can't or don't know how to do any of the above, fanfics or origfics are welcome too. <<
Awesome! It might help to offer how-to resources to encourage folks to try a new medium. I have some on poetry. Other folks have made them on other topics. It would also be useful to offer a team-up post for podfics, because often people are interested in having their work performed, or in performing someone else's work, but don't do both the creation and the voicing.
>> 2. May: since May is National Masturbation Month, I'd like to host a fest for this month too. <<
I've logged this as Solo Celebration Bingo.
>> So if you approve, I'll get started on the public card and rules and promo post for the April fest. <<
Go for it! Once that stuff goes up, I'll link it on the community calendar page.
Re: Yay!
I'd love link(s) to that. I don't have any resources for newbies but I have a few tips and examples (other fanartists) for comic art. It's not much, I know. *wince*
Do you mean where people can sign up as teams?
Anyway, I've got the list of people who give blanket permission for creation of podfics and repodding and a list of those who say blanket no to podfics and other transformative works. BTW, do you have a transformative works policy?
I'll look up other poets on AO3 and link to their policies if they have one. I'll have this ready in at least one week.
I'll have the rule post and public card ready in a day or two. Thanks so much!
Re: Yay!
I'd love link(s) to that. <<
"You Can Write a Nature Poem"
"You Can Write a Science Fiction Poem"
"Thoughts on Rhyming Poetry"
"How to Write Serial Poetry"
And here's a good Wikihow entry on writing poetry.
>> also be useful to offer a team-up post for podfics
Do you mean where people can sign up as teams? <<
I was thinking more where people could look for partners, if they do one thing and want to find someone who does another.
>> BTW, do you have a transformative works policy? <<
Not as such.
>> I'll have the rule post and public card ready in a day or two. Thanks so much! <<
You're welcome, and that sounds great.
Re: Yay!
RE: transformative works policy: so should I add you to the list of people who give permission or should I add you to the list of people who don't give permission? Or would you like me to wait?
Also I'd like to request you to make one, especially since you also write original works (fiction and non-fiction). You could also get a creative commons license for your original works. There are many options: "blanket yes", "permission with caveats", "ask first", or "blanket no". No explanation is required.
If you'd like an example, my policy gives permission with caveats: WIPs are off-limits till I finish them and no to translations.
Re: Yay!
I would prefer not to appear on either list.
>>Also I'd like to request you to make one<<
I don't have a policy, because I don't have a stance, because the issue is complex and key components point in different directions. I don't want to formalize something that is indeterminate and incomplete. If I ever build up enough data to resolve a reliable pattern, or if I find a policy that I like well enough to replicate, then I'll do so at that time. Otherwise I prefer not to make an official declaration.
I am more inclined to make a ruling on specific works. Frex, Schrodinger's Heroes is an open-source fandom. There have also been times when I've teamed up with someone else, either using something I've already created or making something new for a joint project. Narrowing the scope makes it much easier to decide how to handle it.
Re: Yay!
I've posted the rules post and public card, please let me know if I need to change anything. Thanks!
Re: Yay!
We're cool.
>> I hope I didn't seem pressuring or anything like that. And if I did, I'm sorry. <<
Eh, a little, but people do that with things they really care about. You didn't do it in a mean way, and I'm capable of replying politely.
I would like to go fishing for a podcast partner, if you decide to put up a networking post. I've got plenty of poetry that could be recorded, a few scripts, or I could write something new.
>> I've posted the rules post and public card, please let me know if I need to change anything. Thanks! <<
It looks great. I think you did a good job drawing inspiration from other activities and parameters to create something clear and interesting. I have printed out the public card. I also boosted the signal.
Thanks again for organizing this. A community has a much better chance of success with multiple people offering activities.
Re: Yay!
I feel slightly embarrassed but I've never really been part of a big circle or had a following on LJ/DW so I really don't know how. Maybe you could teach me, tell me what to do and I'll set it up.
Thanks! And thanks for the signal boost!
Re: Yay!
No problem. It's good to learn new things!
>> Maybe you could teach me, tell me what to do and I'll set it up. <<
In an event that encourages collaboration, a networking post typically includes a link to the event guidelines, a summary of the kinds of collaboration encouraged, and an invitation for people to comment with their interests. Frex:
"The Spring and Autumn Bingo Fest encourages collaboration. You can play solo, as a team, mix and match, whatever works for you. Some popular examples of collaboration include a writer and a narrator for podcasting, or a writer and an artist for a comic strip. Team up however you like. If you are interested in collaboration but don't already have a partner, leave a comment below this post describing what you do and what kind of partner you'd like to find."
Some also include how-to links on collaboration:
"Creative Collaboration Rules of Thumb"
"How to Collaborate"
"How to Collaborate with a Co-writer"
"Collaboration within Indie Comics"
"What Jazz Soloists Know About Creative Collaboration"

Here's the 2015 calendar so far:

Re: No ...
If it is open I would love to host the two sides of Valentine's day.
One card romantic and the other anti-romance.
If you had something planed then I will think of another month.
