Notes: The first three drabbles are written in a 'verse I created set at the end of WWI. It's set in a country town, where Holmes and Watson settle in the last year of the war. Hopkins moves in with them as he was blinded in action. Warren, an OC, has lung damage and original moves in to help Holmes (mentally scarred by his war work) while Watson continues to work in the military hospital. These drabbles are set after the war.

Compensating for Each Other’s Weaknesses

We had agreed that although we wished to continue growing vegetables in our garden, we would also like to grow some flowers, with Holmes particularly keen on those preferred by bees.  Both Warren and Hopkins had set to with enthusiasm and although Warren was unable to dig for long, as his damaged lungs meant that he was easily out of breath, he would set Hopkins to start digging a trench by guiding him into the right place and then, occasionally calling out an instruction, Hopkins would dig in a straight line, most impressive for one who had lost his sight.

Family Support Makes a Difference

We were delighted when Warren and Annie announced their engagement, but I admit to having certain concerns as to how much of the physical work necessary in a house Warren would be able to do.  However, when I expressed my doubts to John Grainger, Annie’s brother-in-law, he told me that he would be more than happy to help out whenever was needed, and Annie’s two younger brothers had already promised their help in the garden.  It cheered me, that despite all they had gone through in the past few years, the extended Latimer family were determined to support the couple.

Erasure of Handicapped People

I looked up as Holmes threw his newspaper across the room.

“I presume you disagree with whatever’s been written,” I said.  I picked the paper up, but Holmes shook his head in warning, so I was sufficiently prepared when I read the headline to refrain from comment.

Once Hopkins had left to help Mrs Latimer with the shopping, she is of the opinion he is considerably more helpful than either of us, I too exploded.  “How can such a scientist maintain the world would be better without those with handicaps?  It’s a complete disgrace.”

"Sadly, he's not alone," Holmes replied.

Magical Disability

Ponder Stibbons looked around.  He felt as the Head of Inadvisably Applied Magic it shouldn’t be necessary for him to physically demonstrate the role.  He had hoped for a little sympathy from the Archchancellor, but he’d simply laughed and told him it was his own fault.  At least the Librarian was trying to find something helpful in one of the books, in between throwing a ball for him to fetch.  Stibbons barked at the world in general, stood up and chased his tail.  Perhaps he shouldn’t have told his students, ‘there’s a lot we can learn from observing a dog’.
