These are concurrent with Summerchild, a work-in-progress dark-but-not-grimdark, hope wins out (but has a lot to win out over) fantasy novel, chronicling the last days of a cruel and endless winter, the death of a Frost-king, the rise to power of his reluctant and unprepared half-brother, and the beginning of healing. Somebody get the boy-king some shoes. More info here. I wrote these while editing, as a sort of 'keeping the brain in the right perspective' exercise.

NB: although these have lower ratings I would classify the overall project as BBFC 18.

'Bite' - Rob and Rhosyn Nyren, Summerchild-era
Prompt: Bite
Medium: fic
Size: 445 words
Rating: 12
Warnings: matter of fact description of physical injury
Summary/Preview: They answered when the land called, crowned a new king in bloody ritual, and what they got for it was a cold night, the solstice sun in the depths of the earth, and now, finally, rest and care.
Notes: physical injury (in the context of care), the lingering shadow of horrible but unspecified childhood trauma

'Sway' - Eithne/Una, Summerchild-era

Prompt: Sway
Medium: fic
Size: 561 wprds
Rating: 12
Warnings: No warnings beyond the implication of historic abuse.
Summary/Preview: the lady harbourmaster says she came to ask for aid; she actually came to find out what kind of man the new king was - but now she's here, finds she should have come to comfort her secret lover.
Notes: they're secretive about the relationship for political reasons, not homophobic ones

'Shoulder blade' - Fian/Sabha, Summerchild era
Prompt: Shoulder blade
Medium: fic
Size: 1577 words
Rating: 15
Warnings: off-page torture and abuse of power. mind control probably only apparent if you already know. The dove is perhaps not entirely dead but is missing a few feathers.
Summary/Preview: On what will turn out to be the last night of winter, the Frost-king's champion finds more comfort than he expected. But then, she is a chronic pain specialist; he probably should have expected that.
Notes: Not dreadfully graphic (I don't think it gets any worse than the first line); rather a lot of self-loathing, the absolute incomprehensibility of hope, the long shadow of childhood trauma; if Fian admitted he was self-medicating he'd have to admit to needing it; being a healer in a Frost-kingdom is ethically challenging; Iestyn is still alive (for another, like 14 hours at most) and he is his own warning (he is off-page but this is Fian's point of view and Fian's mind is not entirely his own).
At least I managed to use his actual name in this one.
