On Day 1 of the [community profile] sunshine_revival challenge I presented my first completed needlepoint project. It wasn't bad for a first try (and it's a cute design), but I wasted a lot of thread (did a lot of removing and re-doing, lol) so I didn't have enough thread left to do the finishing border.

I've since completed 2 more bookmarks, and though not perfect they are better, and I was able to get the finishing border done on both!

Et Voilà

There’s just something deeply compelling about watching two characters navigate uneven ground - whether it’s age, experience, authority, or institutional power - and still manage to build something charged and intimate between them. Not despite the imbalance, but through it. That slow burn of restraint. The ache of wanting something they shouldn't. The negotiations of trust, timing, control, and care.

This is especially compelling when both characters are competent in their own right, but operating from different registers: mentor/student, coach/player, commander/civilian specialist, master/apprentice. The imbalance isn’t about helplessness - it’s about the impossibility of an even playing field, and the intimacy that arises anyway.

These dynamics can be messy and complicated and so emotionally satisfying when done right. They let fiction stretch into questions of loyalty, respect, control, vulnerability. What does it mean to choose closeness, when there are rules saying you shouldn’t? What does it cost, to reach for someone who could say no with a word?

Some personal favourites:

Jannik Sinner/Simone Vagnozzi – restrained affection, a coach who holds himself too tightly, and a player who sees straight through him
Jannik Sinner/Darren Cahill - built on loyalty, history, and the kind of attention that feels more like possession if you look too long
Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi – power wrapped in devotion, connection shaped by discipline, love made sharper by its impossibility
Jim Ellison/Blair Sandburg – the sentinel and the grad student who never stops talking, thrown together by biology and staying for each other
Jethro Gibbs/Tony DiNozzo – command and obedience with a side of locker room banter and unspoken everything
Jack O’Neill/Daniel Jackson – sarcasm vs sincerity, orders vs ethics, saving the world one lingering look at a time

And yes, this is entirely about fiction. These dynamics let us explore things that might be fraught or even dangerous in real life but that, in the hands of a good writer, become vehicles for emotional tension, character growth, and that delicious blend of intimacy and restraint.

Give me the power imbalance that heightens the stakes. Give me the age difference that adds weight to every decision. Give me the mentor figure trying not to fall. Give me the younger one pushing every boundary, knowing exactly what they're doing. Give me the slow unravelling, the look that lingers too long, the moment someone steps just half an inch closer than they should. Give me the ache of wanting what they shouldn't - and wanting it well.

I want characters who should know better - and want it anyway.

I want stories where love is inconvenient. Where it’s earned. Where it burns, quietly and ferociously, just beneath the surface.

I will never be over it

Forgive me for posting something political, BUT this is something I cannot ignore, it concerns me greatly.

Man, seeing the news that Steam and Itch.io are banning a lot of NSFW and incest games while releasing guidelines that are openly hostile to adult content—all because of payment processors and right-wing activists—is just fucking bleak.

Things continue much as before. I wanted to make a post, but I haven't quite the brain for reviews or the like, so here are two random quick things:

1. Back when we were all making top 100 lists, [personal profile] osprey_archer did a picture books one, and there was a discussion in the comments about US vs UK picture books, so I did a UK one, with the best/most popular/influential picture book illustrators I could think of (up to 2010 when I stopped being a children's librarian and, indeed, anything much), but it took ages to try and make sure I wasn't missing people and put all the covers on, and then I kept forgetting I'd made it.

It's here for those who like clicking on books in a list.

(I apologise for the lack of 2010s and 2020s; but I have not kept up at all! Also I included picture books only for the most part, with a few honourable exceptions, so this means there are very few early reader type books & no comics, but there are picture books for older readers. It needs to be an unorthodox size and shelved in the kinder boxes! Also, I focused on illustrators not authors. Plus a tiny handful were just personal favourites, but it is my list. ;-p)

2. I was talking about Outrageous, the U&Drama/Britbox TV series about the Mitfords last time. It continued to be excellent and it finally occurred to me that I could link the trailer, which would be helpful:

This performance neatly illustrates the difference between violin and fiddle. Technically they're the same instrument, but there are a lot of little tweaks and tricks that lead to different music -- even playing what is also, technically, the same song.  Violin invites you to sit on your ass and listen; fiddle motivates you to get off your ass and move.

It rained and I'm kinda sick anyhow (enough that both me and mom who also felt like I did) so we didn't go to Lucky Uncle's mass for the first anniversary of his passing. At least my brother's cats aren't too freaked out that I exist in their space.

My brother has all kinds of fun streamers. Saw the first episode of Vox Machina S3, meh. And ended up doing what I don't like to do: binge watched. In this case it was Lower Decks. I really wanted to love this. I don't. I mean it's fun but hell after 9 episodes I can barely remember anyone's names so it's not really working its way in.

Challenge #7

The Ferris Wheel
Journaling: Life in fandom goes through ups and downs. Reminisce about the "wild ride" of your time in fandom or in other online communities.
Creative: Create an image or a photo with the theme "let's go for a ride".

Most of my flist knows I got into fandoms back in 1977 after seeing Star Wars when I was ten (I think that might even be in my sticky post) So let me talk about the last 6 years.

Prodigal Son aired in 2019 and oddly enough I didn't like the first episode much. I thought it was too over the top. By Episode 3 however I was on it. I wrote my first fanfic for it (an AU for [community profile] comment_fic prompt and I don't normally go for Aus that radically change canon) only a handful of stories existed then.

Before I knew it, I was live tweeting the show. The actors were freaking talking to me (Lou Diamond Phillips still occasionally does) on Twitter. I had never been in a fandom from the ground floor. For the first time in my life I was a BNF. I mean I've been prolific before and well known but this was new.

And then 2021 happened. I had an accident, nearly lost my leg, had to learn to walk again and the fandom rallied around me. They sent things to my hospital room, had the actors send me well wishes etc etc. But that peak turned into rollercoaster down slope at 90 mph when the show was canceled on a freaking cliffhanger. We ran one hell of a campaign on twitter to save it like we did with Lucifer only this time it failed.

I still write in the fandom occasionally but the hey day is gone.

From their I eased into The Owl House thanks to Evil Little Dog, fell in love but that show ended up canceled almost as soon as I found it. My stories were well received but I was never really into the fandom proper.

From there I stumbled into Hazbin Hotel only a month after it aired (also one I didn't like until about episode 4 when boom I'm in love) but this is a fandom with years of prior notes and fans and a pilot that came out like 5 years before the actual show. And this is literally the most toxic fandom I've ever personally been involved in. (and if I'm honest it's only tangential me being part of the fandom) So that's a bit of a low.

It's not as easy as it used to be back in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer days (which could be pretty toxic too) when LJ and DW had multiple communities where you could hang out with people who only wrote your pairings or were for characters you liked etc. Now mostly you put it out there on the story sites and hang out on tumblr or twitter (yes still from what I can tell) and Bluesky or Mastodon

I wish I could crack the code for getting story attention in this fandom but I do have a small following and that is a high.

and hey I have a little pic too It's the carousel at Kennywood Park, one of my favorite things there.

:: LaQuinta makes a decision that surprises her, and several other people jump in to support her. Part of the Unfair Trades arc in Mercedes, within the Polychrome Heroics universe. ::

The long, skinny space smelled so strongly of pepperoni pizza that LaQuinta imagined for a moment that they were standing inside a wood fire oven on the cheap frozen meal, rather than sitting on the dark olive green cushions of the built in sofa that probably transformed into a double bed. She hadn’t had time to explore.

Cash, sitting on the loveseat-sized section next to Daniel Tamsen, nodded toward the oven. “You’ve got the oven set on convection, so you might want to switch it to regular bake. Otherwise, the pizza will be burned to a crisp on the top and still frozen in the middle.” He patted the air. “I know, because I did it once. My squad didn’t let me live it down for almost three months.”

I read a news article today "K-pop trainee ordered to pay damages after tattoo and dorm exit led to canceled debut". In the article, the trainee was referred to as A, in an effort to protect their privacy — they even used "they/them" pronouns throughout, thinking that concealing their gender might have further helped in concealing their identity. However, they referenced the company involved by name and gave the debut date of the group that A didn't debut with, which meant that 30 seconds at the Kpop Wiki was enough for me to find A's identity. Definitely sub-optimal anonymization.

I'm also not too keen on the headline. To me "canceled debut" sounds like the group that A was to have been in didn't debut, but instead it was just that A didn't get to debut with the group.

Also, if you're curious, according to the contract, the damages in question should have been 60 million won (approx. US$43K) for 2 violations for contract terms (once for leaving the dorm without permission, once for getting a tattoo without permission). For some reason, though, the company sued A for 80 million won (approx. US$58K). The judge ruled that this amount was excessive and ordered A to pay 5 million won (approx. $US3600). The agency is appealing the ruling, though, which just has me eye-rolling. (It seems significant to me, though I don't know if a court would feel this way, that the group that A was prevented from debuting with has already disbanded.)

Today is overcast, humid, and hot.  I'm hearing thunder, so it's likely to rain soon.

I rushed through feeding the birds.  I've seen several sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- It rained at least a little.

I refilled the thistle feeder.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, plus a male cardinal.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- I potted up a white nectarine and a white peach seeds.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- I planted 2 wild senna, one under the golden rain tree and one under the maple.

EDIT 7/26/25 -- I potted up 5 cherry plum seeds and 2 black plum seeds.

I watered the newly planted things.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.
