Another thing that you can use as a springboard is to write a story that gets /right/ a scientific idea that you are very familiar with and fond of, as for "The Martian."
Have you read any /old/ sci-fi or fantasy? The former has an array of disproven science to poke at, but the latter has history biases and whole chains of -isms to poke at.
