Rites of Passage
January 2015 Allbingo Theme

Everyone is born, and eventually, everyone dies. These can be emotionally complex, difficult experiences, but they can also be the pivotal moment in someone else's life, too.

In between those events, there are (hopefully) decades of experiences. A first step, a first word, first day of school, first crush.... the list of pivotal moments could be pages long. Some of them are unremarked, some barely noticed, but some are considered rites of passage, signposts along the path from one life stage to another.

They don't have to be widely-recognized rites of passage, either. Some are very personal to an individual or family. For example, our family keeps fond track of such rites of passage as getting a library card, the first “whatevs” retort, first disastrous attempt at making popcorn... The milestones which mark /your/ path through the world can be powerful, illuminating, funny, sad, terrible, warm, or comforting, and we want to read about them.

Creating a bingo card with ideas for these events is another way to spark creativity, not a prescription or endorsement of any activity. For the average cishet teen, a “first date” is emotionally fraught as a rite of passage, but for gay, bi, asexual, or demisexual people, the experience is entirely different.

There are no minimum word counts. No required inclusions, no exclusions, and while I describe /word/ creations, PLEASE, feel free to use these ideas for any media. Could someone create a bingo of icons? Could I, personally, knit five hats in the month to represent five different rites of passage? (Probably, but the /explanation/ of each would probably take more words each than this post! LOL!) For a better explanation, our rules are already posted for reference.

For anyone who participates in more than one bingo fest, pay attention to their requirements, but feel free to include those items which als answer a square here as fills for this group, too.

Courtesy is expected, and free speech is respected. Feedback is ALWAYS appreciated!

A request: Please use warning labels for the pieces needing them, and if posting directly to the Allbingo community, please use the cut command. (Fast readers can get a FAR better view of a piece than the author might anticipate.) Here is the posting template for this group.

The preview lists a sample card. This is another:

getting a license cotillion or debutante accepting responsibility first word sweet sixteen
last call graduation birthday or naming day a broken friendship long pants
emancipation signs of aging ??? parenthood first job
first flirt new disability last dance death coming out
discovering your orientation tying shoelaces choosing a gift term paper award ceremony

To create your own, go to the bingo generator and use the list included at the end of this post (taking out any you find problematic, of course). The FREE space is labeled with a “?” on the sample cards.

A reward: for those who make bingo, I'm willing to write a 500 word piece to your prompt. Check my page to see what I write in fiction and demifiction, or among my nonfiction posts.

A special fill, called the PATH. If one uses their imagination, it looks a little like a crosswalk or other marked pattern on the ground.

There are FOUR ways to get this fill:

[] All blue squares without the free space: 12 items.
[] All white squares without the free space:12 items.
[] All blue squares plus the free space: 13 Items.
[] All white squares plus the free space: 13 items.

For anyone who manages this long path, I will write a minimum 2000--word fill to your prompt (12-item fill). If anyone manages the 13-item fill, the minimum is 2250 words.

EDITED 28 JAN: It's been pointed out that the 12- or 13-item fill is ENORMOUS, so I'm extending the offer of a prize for the remainder of the year. Just post post replies to this thread, so they're organized in one spot? Thanks, everyone!

>> As the month draws to a close, I'd like to know if this was a good-but-difficult card (I'm stuck trying to figure out how to answer "first kiss" when I don't generally write such scenes at all) or if I need to retool the suggestions I have planned for my next turn as host. <<

It's a great card. I have 11 fills written, which is about typical for me on a new card. I do not have even 5 in a line, although I'm hoping to squeak it in so I'll at least have a line bingo by the end of the month. I have only 7 of the 13 fills I'd need to complete the "path" bingo I was trying for. Awesome writing, though.

>> What did you like from the card? <<

I liked the concept of the "path" bingo and the prompts.

>> What could I improve as your host? Other than checking in closer to the middle of the month rather than here at the tag end? <<

I think that a bigger bingo may work better in a longer fest. The community fests usually run 6 months, although there are shorter ones. Making 5 fills in a line is a stretch within one month, but usually doable especially in a community that doesn't require all the fills to be posted. Getting 13 in a specific pattern is a lot harder and takes longer.

Congratulations! I look forward to seeing all of those.

I've got a 4/5 row and a fifth poem started, but may not be able to finish it because today is our Imbolc ritual. :/ But I have a total of 11 fills on the card, they're just not connected. I am definitely keeping this open and hope to bingo the path eventually. I don't know if I'll manage blackout but it would be fun; I have a good card.
