The Pagan Fest seems to have gone astray, and there's nothing scheduled for June yet.  Would anyone like to step in as a pinch-hitter for May, or claim the June slot?

We don't have anything scheduled for April yet.  I just did February and [personal profile] dialecticdreamer is running this month's Villain Fest.  Would anyone else like to manage a fest in April?  It's fun, and relatively easy.  You pick a theme, post a description and preferably a public card (which you can do midway through the previous month, or first day of the active month), then do a wrapup at the end.

May has the Finish It fest which will run for two months, but no thematic fest yet, so that slot is also available if more than one person has ideas.  Jump in, this is your community too!

Today begins the new August theme: Birthdays!

First, the basics: The card is a mix of concrete details, events, ideas, and a few unusual influences on one's birthday. Birthdays can create a huge range of emotions and ideas. This month’s theme is “birthday”, but that’s just the spark… let your imagination create fire!

The card list:

candles, cake, present(s), balloons, streamers, wish(es), rain, sunny, anticipation, sharing disappointment, singing, music, party, youth, dinner, movie, aging, birth, milestone, maturity, wisdom, regret, opportunity, argument, friendship, secret, surprise, novelty, childish, thoughtful, sincere, melancholy, playful, family, alone, friend(s), grief/grieving, childhood, tradition, adoption.

The central space reads whatever you set it to say. I used: HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The incomparable [personal profile] magibrain has set this up as a default card! Thank you! The card generator:
http://an.owomoyela.net/fun/bingo_generator#generated_card

The rules of the Birthday Bingo:

The prompts include opportunities for hurt/comfort and a lot of things associated with fluff; I’m not suggesting any limits on the types of stories told, so be creative! Feel free to put a positive spin on a “negative” prompt like ‘melancholy’ or a negative spin on a “positive” prompt like ‘presents’.

Rule one is to have fun, and I want to clarify:

- Fills with images, needle arts, paper crafts, music? GO FOR IT.

- There are NO word count minimums for poetry or prose. If you can create a discrete and distinct scene in six words, I really, really want to read it!

- Word-type fills don't have to be fiction. Poetry, demifiction, song lyrics... I left the options wide open.

May I suggest a new, special bingo style?

Special Bingo style: The BIRTHDAY CANDLE

Must be vertical, and is filled with three typical prompts, one {negation prompt} and one {flame} prompt (clearly, the light atop the candle). These may be filled in ANY ORDER, just to allow for more personal interpretation.

A {negation prompt}: Say the square is “grief/grieving” and you want to write a happy prompt. Just have reference to a /lack/ of grieving, but done in a way which fits the story. When noting the “Birthday candle” bingo, just indicate that a prompt is a {negation}.

A {flame prompt} is one where the prompt takes center stage, a major emphasis in the story.. “Grief/grieving” in this usage would be ideal for hurt/comfort, and involve the central character facing either their own birthday after a recent loss, or the birthday of the person they’re grieving. When noting the “Birthday Candle” bingo, indicate {flame} .

A normal prompt: “Grief/grieving” here could mean pretty much anything the writer wishes.

Well, let's see... theme, card style, keyword list, a NEW type of bingo fill... Oh yeah...

A PRIZE!

To anyone who posts a bingo fill (except myself) on the list, please PM me with an idea, whether you want fiction or demifiction (see my blog for some ideas of what kind of demifiction I write) and give me a couple of days. You'll get back at least 200 words, which won't be published on my blog for at least a week.

Let's all get in and have some FUN with this!

On August first, the next Bingo theme begins.

BIRTHDAYS!

Everyone has one, but not everyone has the same reaction to the day, or the same kind of memories. The entire list is gen, but the focus of your prompt is entirely up to the individual.

To whet your appetite, I've created a public bingo card.
(On this card, the FREE SPACE is labeled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!")

argument milestone adoption singing dinner
opportunity music playful party streamers
grief/grieving melancholy HAPPY BIRTHDAY! maturity youth
friend(s) aging sharing disappointment secret regret
alone wish(es) thoughtful movie sunny

On the first of August, I'll post the full details.

I just can't resist offering a little teaser to encourage other writers to post their bingo fills-- I'm actually offering a prize.

There are two points of news today:

1) [community profile] allbingo is now affiliated with [community profile] fanbingo.  I was delighted to discover that [community profile] fanbingo is another high-inspiration, low-pressure community that allows you to make your own cards, post from any fest, and otherwise focus on flexibility.  If you like fanfic tropes then you can get a card from their prompt list too.

2) [community profile] hc_bingo is now open for Round 5. Read the current rules and prompts, then request a card if you want one.  This fest is good for plotty prompts that come with their own tension.  H/C cards combine very well with other cards that designate a character or setting; see the Bingo Card Generator for things like Characterization Tropes, Ethnic Groups, or Setting Tropes.  Just print the two cards, overlay them, and match up the squares.  So if you have B1 "hypothermia" on the H/C card and B1 "chronic hero syndrome" on the other, those two go together in a single fill.

[community profile] allbingo  recommends the use of the BBFC rating system. The introduction explains what kind of things are considered in rating a film and why. This system pays attention to how a work makes people feel (i.e. if it's likely to upset viewers) or act ("imitable behavior" covers unwise things that small children might copy). Scroll down and click the colored symbols in the left sidebar for a detailed description of each rating, what it may and may not include, along with analysis of other considerations. You should be able to read those guidelines and get a pretty clear idea of how to rate a work, unlike the American rating system which is a lot more vague. Because this system isn't as widely known in America, you might want to say "BBFC rating 12" or whatever and link the BBFC part.

If you're only familiar with the American rating system, that's okay too. It doesn't provide clear guidelines and the rating process is not as meticulous, but most people will recognize it.

Special thanks to [personal profile] lilly_c for tipping me to the BBFC resource.  It has been added to the Posting Template for future reference.
